Discover Derawan Island:
A Hidden Paradise
The Derawan Islands offer yet another extraordinary dive destination. This remote group of islands is often overlooked by mainstream divers, making it a lesser-known gem.
Where in the world is Derawan?
The Derawan Archipelago consists of several islands, with Derawan, Maratua, Kakaban, and Sangalaki being the most famous. These islands are accessible via flights to Berau followed by a 2hr drive from Berau and a 40-minute speed boat trip. The trip is well worth the effort. Derawan Island is surrounded by many other islands that offer vibrant coral reefs, secluded and serene underwater experiences for divers and diversity of sea life that is second to none. Tasik Divers Indonesia provides diving holidays to these remote islands, where pristine marine environments await.
Diving Highlights and Marine Life in Derawan
Derawan is known for its calm waters and abundant marine life. Maratua Island is a highlight, offering gentle currents as well as stronger currents that bring “big” encounters with large pelagic species like manta rays, eagle rays, and whale sharks. You will likely see schooling barracuda, and you may encounter eagle rays, and large reef sharks. While manta ray encounters are frequent throughout the region, Manta Point at Sangalaki is the best place to see them up close. A visit to the local village is also a highlight. They are welcoming of visitors and a walk through the village offers encounters with the local people. The local children are particularly welcoming.
Our Base: Derawan Dive Lodge
Derawan Dive Lodge is located on the island of Derawan, which is the main island of the same-named archipelago just off the coast of East Kalimantan in Indonesia. Built on a private white sandy beach, the lodge with its just 10 rooms is a perfect place for everyone who likes the personal touch in his holiday. It is this very personal touch that makes the difference. Its size creates its own uniqueness and the feel of a boutique resort. However whilst maintaining our ‘lodge’ tag, we strive to emulate a resort standard given the limited resources on the island.
There is an incredible diversity of small marine life in the shallows, as well as an ever dominant presence of turtles cruising the reef edge in deeper water. Add to this one of only two stingless Jellyfish lakes in the world and you’re up for a perfect diving holiday!
